Presidents' Day....the day we honor two outstanding presidents in our nation's history.

We probably see more of this one -

 - and it is true that a dollar doesn't go as far as it once did! :)

George Washington was the first president of the United States, a position he wasn't really excited about holding.  He was happiest when he was at his beloved Mount Vernon.

In only four years, Abraham Lincoln brought about much positive change for the United States, though it was a time of war and turmoil.

Lincoln's Gettysburg Address was only two minutes long, and he had no idea his words would be remembered for all the succeeding years afterwards.  Sadly, he was not to live long enough to really be able to evaluate his presidency.

Lincoln's birthday was on February 12, and Washington's birthday comes on February 22.  Today we honor them and their accomplishments for our nation.

  1. Hi Nellie, Hope you are staying warm. I forgot they were celebrating the presidents' day today... Not enough matteress sales ads I guess. LOL. Once when my grandson had a ten dollar bill, he said , "hey, where's my Hamilton?" , he was 4 years old. Cracked me up. Many adults wouldn't know it was Hamilton on a 10 dollar bill. Myself, I am more familiar with the one dollar bill. :):) Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  2. You know, I think we need to emphasize each individual president more than we do these days. Both of these men were vital to the development of the USA that we know and love, and having them lumped together just doesn't seem right to me. Oh, well.....that's just me, and you know how I am! HA!! Have a marvelous Monday, Sister, whatever this crazy weather brings us! Love you!

  3. Nellie- I have been teaching my grands about those two presidents in particular. It is amazing that you can bring them to life for children in a way that they can understand how important they were to our country. xo Diana

  6. Wonder where we would be today with an Abe Lincoln in office? Also wonder if there is anyone of that caliber around to run for president?

Hope you are doing okay and still have your power! It's yucky here, but thankfully no ice, or snow, just plain old rain and colder temps.

  7. Interesting history tidbit, Nellie! It was good to see Washington's Mount Vernon home years ago, a little insight into the past.

I was at Walgreen's this morning when a lady walked in, the clerk asked her why she wasn't working today, the lady told her it's President's Day, and the clerk said, "Really, I didn't know that, what's President's Day for?" Yikes! I read "Mary Todd Lincoln: A Biography" by Jean Baker---a very interesting book that was a little surprising to me with a few things that were said about Abe in it. Have a good week!

  11. I've been to Mount Vernon twice. One time was on Christmas Day. I don't know if they still do this, but volunteers used to prepare food that would have been eaten for Christmas dinner during Washington's time. They had Mount Vernon open on Christmas. The volunteers wore period costumes. I lived in Springfield, Illinois, when they opened the Lincoln museum. It wasn't as good as I thought it would be, but I knew a lot of people who loved it. It's kind of like a Disney version of a presidential museum. I prefer real museums, like Harry Truman's and Lyndon Johnson's.

    Love,
    Janie
