A tradition....

For the past forty years, baking Hot Cross Buns on Good Friday has been a tradition.  This recipe is one that appeared in our local newspaper in the early eighties.  I think it has been featured on the blog in past years. I have baked hundreds of these through the years, often multiplying the recipe!  This year is no exception!

Here is one pan, just out of the oven and awash in glaze, studded with currants!

Perfect with bacon alongside and a cup of tea!

Be safe, stay well, and may your Easter season hold special blessings for you!

  1. Oh, Sister!!! How I would love to have just one of those buns! You've perfected the art of baking, and I enjoy anything that comes from your kitchen. Happy Easter! Love you!

  2. Gosh, I've never seen Hot Cross Buns with a cut before, but confess my pre bake crosses failed so badly I actually thought about cutting mine too! Mine are always sweet, not savoury. Love them toasted, and wonder, as with Shrove Tuesday pancakes, why we don't do them more often. The Bookends of Lent!

  4. I never thought of making Sweet Cross Buns individually. Mine are raised sweet dough and they are all stuck together in a pan and once they have cooled, I make a cross of glaze on top. I might make them in a muffin pan this time.

Since I'm still fasting until after Easter Vigil this evening, I will not be able to taste them until after the late evening.

Happy Easter to you and all your loved ones.

  8. Your hot cross buns look sumptuous, Nellie. I wish I could bite into one right now. Thank you for your visit and comment on Writing Straight from the Heart. You are right. The "firsts" sear the heart every time. It is a journey that most of us have to walk but I don't wish it on anyone. It is so, so hard, Nellie. Only with God am I doing it. Have a good rest of the week, my dear friend. Hugs. Susan
