That ham bone....

....was especially tasty in Split Pea Soup!

It had been a long time since we enjoyed this soup!  Great mileage from that Thanksgiving ham!  I had stored the ham bone in the freezer along with a few more nice pieces, already chopped and ready to add to the soup!

8 cups water
1 pound dried split peas (about 2 1/4 cups)
1 ham bone
1 medium onion, chopped (about 1/2 cup)
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 medium carrots, cut into 1/2-inch pieces (about 1 cup)
2 medium stalks celery, cut into 1/2-inch pieces (about 1 cup)
- Heat water and peas to boiling in Dutch oven.  Boil 2 minutes; remove from heat.  Cover and let stand 1 hour.
- Stir onion, salt, and pepper into peas; add ham bone.  Heat to boiling; reduce heat.  Cover and simmer until peas are tender, about 1 hour.
- Remove ham bone; trim ham, cutting into 1/2-inch pieces (about 4 cups). Stir ham, carrots, and celery into soup.  Heat to boiling; reduce heat.  Cover and simmer until vegetables are tender, about 45 minutes.  8 servings (about 1 1/2 cups each).

This recipe is once again from Betty Crocker, the same 1986 issue as my previous post.

  1. If I bring my own bowl, may I have some, please? This is just so good looking, and I'm sure it was delicious! Have a wonderful Wednesday, Sister!!

  2. I love Split Pea Soup. You beat me to it. lol... I was going to make some but I had homemade pesto in my fridge so I made Chicken Pesto Pizza for lunch instead.

  3. Nellie, I like peas but have never eaten pea soup. Don't know why...just has never appealed to me...but my Teddy loves it. Hope you are keeping warm there. Those nice meals you are making should be helping. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  4. I love to make soup with meaty ham bones, Nellie! Your split pea soup looks delish! I must tell you I made your Harrow Road Cafe Rolls and they were gobbled up quickly in my home! Thank you for sharing your recipes! Stay warm and cozy! ♥

  5. One of my hubby's favorites. We had a friend that just gave us a huge container of this soup and John has eaten it three times in a row. lol I am freezing some of it now. Trying to get a few blog visits in tonight while hubby is feeling good. xo Diana

  6. I've never made this myself but will someday

  7. Them bones them bones them....ham bones!
I made ham and beans this week. I had enough to feed my parents, my friend, and us twice! I've never had split pea, but I'm sure it's delish with those ham bones in it. I think bones always flavor a soup more than anything else can.

  8. I think I need to make soup, too. Perfect for dinner tonight. I've got a piece of chicken that would be just right for it. Keep cozy!

  9. I love pea soup and always make it if i have a ham bone. I made it for the first time in my crock pot one day when I was babysitting my granddaughter. It came out really well--maybe a little less thick than usual but it was still good.
