Glencoe Museum

This is a continuation of our road trip last week when we were at Emory and Henry College.

After we left Ingles Farm and had lunch, there was another stop scheduled.

Located alongside the New River.

China typical of the period.

Woodwork as originally finished.

Glencoe Museum is located in the former home of General G. C. Wharton, CSA, and his wife, whose father deeded land on which to build the house in the 1870s.  The home has been beautifully restored and now houses period rooms, history exhibits, and an art gallery.

Lovely quilt in an upstairs bedroom.

Uniform on display.

Of course, I failed to get the name of the artist who had some very colorful art on display.:-(  I must have been too anxious to spend time in the gift shop.:-)

When is the first day of the new school year where  you are?  Our local schools will begin on Tuesday, August 14 for a half-day.  There are actually some students who will go to school on Monday for a half-day - new middle-school pupils!  This is my tenth year to be retired and not begin a school year.

In keeping with the back-to-school theme, the next post will feature a one-room school house!

Thank you for reading.  I really appreciate  your comments.

  3. Hi Nellie, I'm catching up on blogs now --after being gone for a week... I have enjoyed reading about your trip back to Emory and Henry--and to Radford. That is my old stomping grounds since I grew up in Big Stone Gap.

The name Glencoe must be quite significant in that area. My family are all buried in the Glencoe Cemetery in Big Stone Gap.

The schools here in Cumberland County started last Wed.... We always start early since we have to take so many snow days (except for last winter)....

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  4. Well, I have tried twice to leave a comment, and keep coming up with an error. I'll try again later! Anyway, public school starts on Aug. 16 in our county, and our Christian school starts on Aug. 20.

That museum looks like a lovely place to visit, and I'm sure the architecture and furnishings are quite wonderful!

  5. Hi Nellie- I am always amazed at how early some schools start. Our kids don't go back until after Labor Day.

I'll bet you can't believe that you have been retired for 10 years already. Blessings to you- xo Diana

  7. You certainly have been busy Nellie! I have enjoyed reading about your travels and looking at your photos. Always interesting to learn about your country.
Hope the weather is more moderate now and that you are receiving enough rain to keep your garden fresh.
Hope that you and your family are well.
    Betty

  8. Oh what a lovely museum visit.

Look at that sooooooooooo pretty, rose painted china. Love it!!!!!

Here, school doesn't start till after Labor Day. It's interesting, how different areas have differing beginning school times.

What did you teach, if I may ask? :-)

    Gentle hugs,
    "Auntie"

  9. Isn't it amazing that we always remember the start of school. Even in the days before my kids started school, I never could get away from the first day of school feeling.
I still have it too. I maybe always will.
It looks like a very nice place to visit.
