The staff of life - Cookbook Wednesday....

"Long ago, and far away," in the time before bread machines....

....there were cookbooks for breads.  In fact, there still are!

This one comes from 35 years ago, but was originally copyrighted in 1966, nearly 50 years ago.

The loose pages indicate the use this cookbook has seen.

The section on Sourdough Breads has been particularly useful.  In the past, that is.  It has been several years since I've kept sourdough going here.

Sourdough English Muffins have been a favorite, and this has a whole grain version which we really like.

Sourdough pancakes and waffles - even using buckwheat flour - have also been popular here!

Other recipes have been used as well.

This shows the Parmesan Cheese and Dill Bread version.  Yum!

I will be linking with Louise at Months of Edible Celebrations today.

Do you enjoy baking bread?

  1. I really enjoy EATING breads, and you have made some great ones! I have never picked up the knack for handling yeast breads, but have had some success with those that don't require kneading. Now I'm hungry! Have a wonderful Wednesday, Sister!

  3. Nellie, I am a huge fan of bread and always have been. I am cutting down carbs though so I will be eating less of it in the future :)

  5. Nellie, did you made your own sourdough? I tried last year but I think I waited too long as the liquid turned bubbly and then turned into alcohol and I dumped it.

I so want to try again when it gets warmer.

Like you ,I have some old cookook that I can't part with. When I got married I had no cooking experience except baking bread. I did like my mother and measured by eye or in the hand and the bread was so good. Now I need a recipe as I no longer make much bread.

    Hugs,
    JB

  11. I think I still have a bread cookbook. I love baking, but I seldom do it now because I would eat it.
