What did I buy?

Happy Friday to you!  Do you have some exciting things planned for the upcoming week-end?

The past few posts have been about our recent trip to Jamestown - and Williamsburg - with our Munchkin grandchildren and our daughter and son-in-law.  Of course, there were many things "calling my name" to come home with me.:-)  Today, I will share one of those with you.

A book - of course!

This sounds like a grueling schedule to me!

Images of what it may have been like to sail on the Susan Constant.

Instruments used for sailing in the early 1600's.

A glossary is even included to assist those of us who are  unfamiliar with some of the terms.

You are not surprised that I came home with a book, are you? :-)

There were 104 men and boys who were sailing on the three ships to establish the colony in the New World.  The book gives an account of how it might have been to sail on the Susan Constant.  Everyone had duties to perform under the leadership of Captain Christopher Newport, the commander of the ship.  (Bartholomew Gosnold was commander of the Godspeed, and John Ratcliffe was the commander of the Discovery).  No women or girls were brought on this voyage.  The three ships set sail on December 20, 1606 and arrived off the coast of Virginia in late April of 1607.

I have much more for you in the coming days.  The next post will jump ahead just a bit as I want to share what we found in bloom in Williamsburg!  I hope you will follow along.

Thank you for reading.  I really appreciate your comments.

  2. I'm sure this book is most interesting reading! One can only imagine the hardships of those days so long ago. I'm VERY thankful for all that we have these days to make our lives so much easier as we do our daily chores! Have a fantastic Friday, Sister!

  4. Hello on a gorgeous, spring day in TENNESSEE. Wow---after the long and bitter winter we had this year, Spring is even more inviting and lovely.

When did you all go to Jamestown and Williamsburg? I had missed those posts I guess.... We LOVE that area --and there's more education there than anywhere...I'm sure the grands loved it all... Did you get to see/hear the Drums and Fifes????

We are now home 'again' --after our 5th trip since the end of February.... Seems as if we visited five different states --although the trips weren't planned for that reason... ha... BUT--as I always say, it's great to be home... I did publish a blog post today--so check it out when you have time. Have a wonderful weekend.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  7. Nellie, I would have been shocked if you had come home without a book. :):) I love learning things....but I almost want to bulk at manuals...I think that's from reading so many at work with my job.LOL. Hope your weekend is wonderful. Ted and I plan a dinner date on Sunday. Tomorrow, I may pick up some seeds, I want a wild flower bed this year. xoxo,Susie

  9. You must have a large library by now. I used to collect books and since I look online now, books seems to have taken a back seat. I still buy the odd self help books.

I'm thinking of taking a long vacation from Blogger. Time seems to be shrinking and going at a break neck speed and the busy season is upon us.
