This is the earliest picture I have of my father. I have been told he was in the eighth grade when this picture was taken. Is that what you remember, Sister?
Unfortunately, he passed away in 1973 on Sister's birthday week-end, at the age of 63 (before he had his 64th birthday). While that is, to me, a young age, he actually outlived his three brothers and my grandparents.
It was a blessing to have a good man such as he was as my father. I've childhood memories of fishing trips (can't believe I actually helped dig red worms for bait!) and local baseball games with him, as well as listening to the radio tuned to the broadcast of a major league game. I don't think he missed any!:-)
Well, I had written a long comment, but since I'm not at home, this computer wiped it all out and made me sign in! I do recall that he was of 8th grade age, but I was of the understanding that he had to drop out of school after the fourth grade to help his parents on the farm, and finished his elementary education many years later, after he and Mother were married. He was a good man, teaching us much about the importance of faith and family, and he would be SO proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren if he were here today. Love you, Sister!
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice heart-felt post, Nellie! He sounds like a wonderful dad to have great memories of!

ReplyDeleteWhat a nice tribute to your Dad. It is a nice picture too.
ReplyDeleteHe was so young to passed away at that age.
Have a great weekend Nellie.
It's good that you remember your dad this way. Sorry you lost him as such a young age.
ReplyDeleteHugs,

You know, there is something about the sound of a baseball game on the radio. That's how I learned the rules of the game; I listened on the radio and payed attention. It's the only sport I really like.
