The copyright dates in these are from the thirties! They were found in some papers that belonged to my mother.
There was this one that came with the refrigerator, a step up from the ice box.
There was this one that came with the electric stove.
However, this one is the one that captured my attention.
For many years, Calumet was the baking powder that would wind up in my shopping cart. It has become difficult for me to locate that brand in markets these days, for some reason.
When I opened this booklet, I found this page:
The notations on this Devil's Food Cake recipe belong to Mother. My sister, who follows this blog, may
remember when Mother baked this cake.
It appears that Mother also had some frosting favorites.
Are you making any resolutions for 2015? I know one I am making. The next chocolate cake I bake will be this Calumet Devil's Food Cake! I will keep you up to date on the results.
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year, Nellie!
ReplyDeleteI believe I do remember some yummy cakes that Mother baked, and I remember that we always had problems with 7-Minute Frosting, as it would fluff up nicely in the pot, but would always form a crust on top that was not what we wanted! You are fortunate to have those special cookbooks, and I believe that Munchomom will enjoy them one day as well. My favorite from "those days" is the Wesson Oil cookbook that Daddy sent 50 cents in to get, back in the early 50s. I still use that cookbook, although it is falling apart now. That's where my pastry recipe came from, as well as the "Lovelight Chiffon Chocolate Cake" that so many folks have enjoyed over the years. Thank you for this trip down Memory Lane, Sister! I've enjoyed it a LOT! Have a wonderful New Year's Eve, and stay safe!
ReplyDeleteWhat treasures, Nellie! I especially like that Calumet book too. I'm not sure I have that one. It was difficult to find Calumet Baking Powder around here for a while but finally it is in one of the local stores. (and in my cupboard too:) I'd glady send you one if you still can't find it around by you. It just wouldn't be Devil's Food Cake without Calumet (and yes 7 minute frosting:)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing, Nellie...Wishing You and Yours a very Happy and Healthy New Year!!!
P.S. I'll be adding this link to Cookbook Wednesday for you:)
I just love the look of those old recipe pamphlets!
