Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr......

The third Monday in January has been determined to be a federal holiday by virtue of the bill passed by Congress in 1983 honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  As the main leader of the civil rights movement in the United States during the 1950's and 1960's, he effectively expressed the demands of black Americans for social justice.

Following are some quotes from Dr. King:

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

"A man should do his job so well that the living, the dead, and the unborn could do it no better."

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is....what are you doing for others?"

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."

"....But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward."

"Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend."

For his efforts in leading non-violent civil rights demonstrations, Dr. King was awarded the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize.  Under his leadership, much was accomplished.  There is still much more to be done.

  1. Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech is one of my all time favorite speeches, Nellie. You are so right that we have so much more to accomplish...It makes me sad we have only taken baby steps. Thank you for this thoughtful post! ♥

  2. I read a lot of American novels, yet I know so little, too little, about this part of your history.

  3. He had the right idea and the right approach. I believe we would be much farther along in our quest for racial equality if he had not been murdered. Such a sense of balance and decency! Thank you for these words of remembrance today, Sister. We do know something of the struggle, having been students at Clinton High School during those turbulent years. Love you!
