Ahead of time....

Happy Friday!  Today is actually Abraham Lincoln's birthday!

As we now honor his memory with President's Day - coming up Monday - here is a dessert that will have that two-fold purpose of honoring George Washington, whose actual birthday is several days away.

When I was teaching, I would purchase something called Swiss Cake Rolls made by Little Debbie. They resembled the logs of the cabin where Lincoln had his beginning, and the students really enjoyed them.  So - I associate the chocolate of this cake with Abraham Lincoln.  The cherries that are added remind me of that story of George Washington and the cherry tree.

Once again, I must give Betty Crocker credit for this one.  It appears in a cookbook from the late seventies.

I followed the directions for the Chocolate-Cherry Cake variation.  I do believe it will be amazing served with a dollop of whipped cream!:-)  It would also be great for a Valentine's Day simple dessert!  Can't wait!:-)

  1. I still always want to make cherry pie on the 22nd. I think that would be fun and the cake rolls too. I never thought about that. My Dad passed away on this day 13 years ago. Now I don't think about it being Mr. Lincoln's birthday, thanks for the reminder. My new DIL wanted a Betty Crocker cookbook. I was so thrilled to buy her one just like I got mine in 1980. I know I still use it more than all of my other cookbooks combined. Have a lovely weekend Nellie.

  2. A great day for baking when it's cold out there. Those were two great presidents.

  3. OH, Sister! You know how much I love chocolate, and the cherries just make it better! You know I have two birthdays coming this weekend, and one wants carrot cake while the other wants an apple/cherry pie, so I'll be staying pretty busy for Mr. Lincoln's birthday! Have a fabulous Friday! Love you!

  8. My mom gave me a Betty Crocker cookbook the night before I got married, which was in about 1905. It's my go-to cookbook.

    Love,

  10. I never thought of Swiss Rolls as being like a log cabin - how clever you are! (Funny Bones are my favorite - I wonder what they are similar to??) :D
